Once the flow is mapped, the next step is making the boundaries visible to people who have never seen the layout before and are not going to read a posted sign carefully in the middle of a hot, crowded afternoon.
This is where physical markers do work that verbal instruction and signage alone cannot. A set of orange safety cones positioned along the edge of a landing zone or across a restricted deck area gives every guest, staff member, and passerby the same instant read: this space is active, stay clear. Unlike a sign, which requires someone to stop and look up, a cone line registers peripherally. Someone walking with a tray of drinks or watching their kids will notice and route around it without breaking stride, which is exactly the behavior a busy facility needs.
The boundaries worth marking this way are the ones where the consequence of someone wandering through is highest: the direct splash and exit zone at the base of the slide, any wet deck surface that becomes genuinely slick, and the transition point where the queue narrows and foot traffic compresses.

The difference between a facility that has thought this through and one that hasn’t is usually visible within the first few minutes of watching. A well-run attraction has a queue that moves with a rhythm, an exit zone that stays clear because the path guides people away from it naturally, and staff who are watching the crowd rather than reacting to it.
A facility that hasn’t planned the operations side looks different. The line backs up unpredictably. Riders exit into foot traffic. Staff spend the afternoon redirecting people rather than monitoring the water. None of this shows up in a slide’s spec sheet, and none of it gets fixed by a better attraction. Building the Operational Plan Alongside the Equipment Plan
The properties that avoid these problems tend to build the operations plan at the same time they’re selecting the attraction, not after installation. That means walking the layout for pinch points, deciding in advance which zones need physical boundary marking and which can rely on staff positioning alone, and training staff on the specific flow of that specific property rather than generic pool-deck protocol.
