April bird is a commentary on a female character named April. It is also derived from a mythical association with how the Greek thought of April as a time of spring. This is a month, which is considered to be the season when vegetation blooms in connection to Aphrodite. As well, April is a direct reference to female Roman goddess, Venus. The bird is iconic to the bird of Kumay or Umany, references Turkic mythology. Therefore all these insights become a month for growth, fertility and love.
The construction of April Bird, gives texture and richness to the illustration. It was originally made with a white Styrofoam plate. A selected color palette was mixed on the plate in order to create an allusion to earth tones. The multiple layers affect the ink when the girl is drawn on top. The bird is made from the extra edges and space used on the plate. When the transformation was done, the plate was scanned and brought to the computer to later experiment with the ideas of April Bird.
